With a career dating back to 2004, Dr. Sierra exemplifies dedication and precision in the field of dentistry. He graduated from the European University of Madrid in both Dentistry and Endodontics, where he is also an active collaborator in the Master’s program in Endodontics.

Dr. Sierra has significantly contributed to dental education as the director, alongside his colleague Alejandro Peña, of the Master’s in Endodontics at the Catholic University of Murcia.

In addition to his professional life, Dr. Sierra is the father of three children and a passionate natural bodybuilding competitor at national and international levels, which brings discipline and balance to his daily life.

Could you tell us how you started using magnification?

Since 2007, I have used a microscope for magnification in my clinical practice. Before that, I used loupes with various magnifications. However, when I don’t have access to a microscope, such as during courses or external consultations, I use the 7.5X Ergo loupes, which are comparable to the microscope. They offer improved ergonomics, and I also have a wireless Butterfly light source.

What factors did you consider when selecting your loupes?

When selecting loupes or magnification devices, I consider not only the design but also their versatility and ergonomics. It’s crucial for the loupes to be lightweight to ensure comfort during long work sessions, allowing me to be efficient without sacrificing posture. Illumination is another fundamental factor; an adequate light source provides greater depth of field, improving visual quality.

For those starting in this field, I recommend looking for powerful lighting systems to achieve greater depth of field. Additionally, ergonomics and ease of movement are key.

At Víttrea, there are several options such as systems with a battery pack, which can be a bit less comfortable due to the wiring, although the latest technologies have improved their comfort. We also have wireless systems like Butterfly, which are lighter and easier to use thanks to their magnetic design.

What do you consider the key aspects when selecting magnification?

When choosing magnification, it’s important to note that more isn’t always better. The appropriate choice depends on the specific field of application. For instance, in endodontics, where we work in smaller fields, higher magnifications can be beneficial. However, in areas like aesthetics or surgery, where a larger field of view is needed, too much magnification can be counterproductive.

An initial magnification of 7.5X for endodontics may seem excessive, but you soon find it adequate, as lower magnifications can quickly become insufficient. Now there are 10X loupes, which I might choose now for their higher magnification potential.

What advice would you give professionals considering starting to work with loupes in endodontics?

For those starting, it’s important to recognize that there is a learning curve. Depending on individual skills, the learning curve can vary, but it’s a necessary step to improve in our profession.

Using magnification doesn’t reduce work time but significantly improves the quality of what we do, allowing us to perform procedures that would be difficult or impossible without it.
