Interview with Dr. Carla Fons, Specialist in Periodontics and Implants

In today’s interview, we had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Carla Fons, a specialist in periodontics and implants, about how ergonomics and magnification have significantly improved her postural health.

She graduated in dentistry from the University of Valencia and has always felt a strong calling to the healthcare field: “My parents are dental doctors, and since I was a child, I loved going to my mother’s clinic and watching my father’s slide projector presentations.”

Currently, she works as a periodontist at the Fons*Badal Clinic in Valencia, and in her free time, she enjoys traveling, reading, and practicing yoga.

Dr. Fons uses Víttrea’s Ergo 5X loupes, which allow her to clearly view the working area without bending her neck and while keeping her back completely straight.

Interview with Dr. Carla Fons

Dr. Fons, since when have you been using magnification, and why did you start? What kind of loupes have you used so far?
I’ve been using magnification since I completed my Master’s in Periodontics in 2010. I used to wear loupes with 2.8X magnification, but I now use Ergo 5X loupes.

What advantages would you highlight about using loupes and lighting systems? How do they affect your work?
In my opinion, working with magnification significantly improves the quality of your work—you can see details that are invisible to the naked eye. Now, with the Ergo loupes, in addition to improved vision, my working posture has also improved a lot.

What advice would you give to professionals who are considering starting to use loupes?
I would say it’s a very smart decision, and I’d recommend using the loupes I currently use (Ergo 5X), as they’re very easy to adapt to and not only improve your work quality but also your ergonomics.

What factors did you consider when choosing your current loupes? What magnification did you choose and why?
I wanted to improve my posture at work, since most dentists suffer from back problems. I thought that with this type of loupes (Ergo 5X), I could prevent future health issues.

I also wanted greater magnification because I believe seeing details allows for better execution and finishing of treatments. When I work with these loupes, I feel like I’m seeing the kind of detail you get on a big congress screen.

My ergonomics have completely changed—now I always work upright, using a lot of indirect vision instead of bending my back like I used to.

Has your ergonomics changed with the use of loupes? How have you noticed the difference?
My ergonomics have completely changed—now I always work upright, relying a lot on indirect vision instead of bending my back like before.

Also, my neck stays in a straight position, which has greatly reduced the back pain I used to have. I thought it would be harder to adapt to this new posture, but I adapted quickly.

Do you use loupes in all the treatments you perform?
At first, I only used them for more complex procedures, but now I use them for everything because you get used to a level of detail that the naked eye simply doesn’t provide.

What would you advise a colleague who’s just starting to use magnification?
To buy high-quality loupes with strong magnification, because I truly believe it will elevate the quality of their work.

Thanks to Dr. Carla Fons for her testimony and for trusting Víttrea to incorporate Ergo loupes into her daily practice.
